Genealogy, The Search For Our Roots.

The genealogy craze is sweeping the nation. More and more people are hopping online to trace back their heritage to as far back as history goes. If you really stop and think about it, this is exactly what the net is supposed to be. A huge, vast resource of potentially limitless information, and anyone with a computer has access to it. More and more the non-geek users are driving the explosion of these huge databases, and little mom & pop type web sites are boasting incredible hit counts daily. The big news in this front, however, is the introduction of the Mormon Church's backed site, familysearch.org. Family Search opened today to great fanfare. They are already on pace to have over 30 million hits today alone. And to think that NASA had to send a little robot all the way to Mars just to attract this kind of attention. So clearly the Church must have something really special in order to drive that kind of traffic. It is often said that their library possesses some of the best genealogy records anywhere. Over 2500 people visit that library on a daily basis, and with more people learning about exactly how much information they possess, they are expecting that number to surge as well. And as more people learn about who they are, and who their relatives are, this is clearly one use of the Internet that can only pull people together, which is exactly what our society could use right about now.
